The Facts

Faster results, proven

Arizona counts more ballots than almost any state and reports them slower than almost any state. Here's why, and what changes.

The bottleneck

Why the count runs long

Most Arizonans vote early by mail. A large share of those ballots are dropped off at a voting location on election day itself. Each one still needs signature verification, and, if a signature doesn't match, a curing window, before it can be tabulated. That work is careful, and it happens after the polls close.

An estimated 264,554 early ballots, approximately 7.7% of all ballots cast statewide, were returned at polling locations on election day in 2024. Arizona's 2024 general-election results were not officially certified until 20 days after election day.

Prop 144 does not remove any of that, and it does not take away your mail-in ballot. If you like voting from home, keep doing it, the early ballot still comes to your mailbox. Prop 144 adds a choice: a voter who wants their ballot counted on election night can have it tabulated on-site, in front of them.
