The Fast, Accurate, Secure and Transparent Election Results Act, in plain English

· 6 min read

Close-up of a ballot being fed into a tabulation machine

The measure's formal designation is the Fast, Accurate, Secure and Transparent Election Results Act. Campaign names are marketing until you check them against the text, so let us do that.

Fast

The speed provision is the on-site tabulation option. Today, a mail ballot dropped off on election day has to be transported, envelope-verified and batch-processed before it can be tabulated, the reason results trickle out for days. Under Prop 144, a voter can choose to have their ballot verified and run through a tabulator at the voting location, which moves that ballot out of the backlog entirely.

Accurate

Faster is only better if it is also right. Nothing in the measure changes Arizona's post-election procedures, logic and accuracy testing before the election, hand-count audits, and the canvass all continue. On-site tabulation does not skip verification; it moves verification to the moment of return rather than days afterward.

Secure

The security provisions are the uniform proof-of-identity standard for every ballot, the explicit citizens-only voting requirement, and the ban on foreign national spending. The unifying idea is a single rule that does not depend on how you chose to vote.

Transparent

Transparency here means a result the public can see on election night rather than a week of partial updates. It also means a verification standard that is easy to describe to a skeptical neighbor: you showed ID, the machine counted it, the tape printed.
